An Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his selfless gesture changed my life in multiple respects. I would never have had the bravery or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
