Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The anticipation around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
