In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
